"It's time to protect salmon in BC's Sacred Headwaters"

Below is a letter written by the Friends of Wild Salmon, a group working to protect the Sacred Headwaters. The letter is addressed to Peter Voser, CEO of Royal Dutch Shell, Lorraine Mitchelmore VP, Exploration of Royal Dutch Shell, and Blair Lekstrom, BC Minister of Energy, Mines, and Petroleum Resources. "One year ago, the BC government declared a moratorium on Shell’s coalbed methane project in the Sacred Headwaters. I am writing to reaffirm my commitment to ensuring that this destructive project never occurs in this important area. The health of the Sacred Headwaters is critical to the communities downstream in the Skeena, Nass and Stikine watersheds – all of which depend on wild salmon for their economies and cultures. Since the moratorium was put in place, neither the importance of the Headwaters nor our opinions about coalbed methane drilling in the area has changed. If anything, communities have strengthened their resolve to protect this magnificent area. I ask that Shell and the BC government respect the wishes of the majority of residents in the three watersheds and withdraw the tenure for coalbed methane development in the Sacred Headwaters.
